Savvy Financial Moves You Should Consider as You Age
CONTRIBUTED POST
Money is something you will always need, regardless of your age on the calendar.
You might think that, as you get older and progress through life, the way you interact with your finances and manage your money will automatically become easier.
After all, there is something to be said about being older and wiser. And yet, it is not a magical thing that occurs. Instead, you need to arm yourself with information and educate yourself on the next steps you intend to take to stay money-wise and ensure you protect your finances going forward.
Rethink Your Home
Your home, unless it is paid off, is a considerable expense. It is possibly the biggest one you have. And even if it is paid in full, the cost to maintain it is something you should take a close look at.
If you determine that your home is the right one for you and you can afford to stay in it, then you have another move to consider instead.
Look at the equity in your home and learn more about whether or not reverse mortgages will be advantageous for you to consider.
Regardless of what you choose to do, it is always a smart move to read everything in full before ever signing your name on any document. You need to understand everything from timelines to interest rates and collateral.
If the process is confusing for you, and that is understandable because it can be very complex, contact your trusted financial advisor or look for more guidance from a reputable source.
Rethink Loaning Money to Others
If you have made a habit of helping those you love by lending them money over the years, it is time to take a long and hard look at that practice.
Scrutinize every transaction that you have made that deals with lending money to others. Ask yourself whether they paid you back at all. Look at whether or not they paid you back in full and on time.
Take note of whether you had to ask for or insist on getting the money back. If the process was never fair, in your favor, and caused you undue stress, or worse - put your well-being and finances in jeopardy - then you need to put a pause on the bank of you.
When people fall on tough times, you want to be there to help. But you should never, ever do it at your own expense.
In addition, if people are not respectful and do not pay the money back on time and in full, or cause you problems, you should not be lending them money.
As you age, you cannot get a loan for retirement and might not be able to work as much or in the same way as you did in the past. They might be younger and have more opportunities to earn an income.
Life is interesting, and it gives you a lot of twists and turns, especially with your finances. Take charge of your money by finding savvy ways to make it work for you.
